So my husband wants to go away for a while (week max) once his grandmother passes to regroup and relax together. Does anyone have any suggestions? Our big thing is not a lot of people...we're both outdoorsy but still want somewhere relaxing and quiet...

I suppose a lot of places could be tried, and some can be somewhat 'rustic' if you desire. Since we're a diving forum, I'd work with that.

Have you been to Bonaire? It's not as densely populated as Aruba, shore diving lets you go at your own pace without dealing with charter boats (unless you want to), and you can take a day to cruise through Washington-Slagbaai Park for scenic views and photography, drive through the donkey sanctuary, and if you're really adventurous give kite boarding or wind surfing a try. You'll see other dive trucks out, but it's got a rustic feel to it, and there are restaurants to check out if you like.

Some resorts would be more 'serene' than others. I like a resort with a nice house reef for on-site diving at well, personally, though I enjoyed the cost savings at Dive Hut.

I've never been to Saba, and it'd be charter boat diving, but from what I understand it's pretty rustic.

Richard.

You might see if Virgin Gorda is what you want. It's very quiet - only 3K people live on the whole island. Some of the beaches we were the only ones nearby for a long time. Several you need a boat to access. It's mostly higher end resorts and villa rentals though - not sure what you meant by "outdoorsy" - there's a lot of hiking and miles of secluded beaches. It's also windy and yacht-based so daytrips to other islands are easy to do. DiveBvi for diving - one of the true valet dive operations I've used. There's a lot of good diving up and down the channel including the Rhone wreck nearby. VG has some excellent restaurants and a small amount of nightlife. Leverick Bay does a bbq on Friday night that everybody goes to. It's a really peaceful quiet place except for a few roosters. We rented a villa and the mgr. didn't have external door keys - said they'd never needed them. You can get there via fast ferry from St. Thomas or a smaller regional airport on Tortola just across the channel. For even more seclusion, several of the smaller islands only have one resort property on them.

Key information needed:

Where are you starting off from? This is an international forum, and it does make a difference if you're located in Kansas, Miami, Western Canada or London, England.

What kind of dive skills do you have? There are places that are good for beginners, others? Not so much.

Taking into a count your estimates of airfare costs, what is your budget?

Where do you live and what kind of (outdoor) activities to you like in addition to diving?

Virgin Gorda is also the first place that came to my mind. We've stayed many times at Guavaberry Spring Bay, and dived with DiveBVI. The cottages at Guavaberry Spring Bay are far enough from each other, and hidden by boulders, that you can feel quite alone. DiveBVI is a great dive operation, and the diving is nice.

The best vacation I've had in years was when I stayed here and took two weeks off in July/Aug 2011. Sleeping in my own bed every night, not having to get up for the kid's school, work....only to get the boat in the water. A lot of fish died those couple weeks. ya man.
