On a recent trip to Cayman I noticed that almost evrytime I saw a turtle it was hanging out with a few Grey Angel fish that appeared to be closely "gaurding" and following the turtles both while free swimming and at cleaning stations. This happened more than five times. Do the Angel fish clean the turtles or what? Just hiding behind it maybe? Both? Just being friendly? Thanks in advance. Obviously the angel fish might be getting a cleaning at the stations too, but what's the deal with the free swimming angel/turtle thing?:06:

I have also noticed that in Cayman. Unfortunately, I have no answer as to why that is. Hopefully someone here will have an educated guess. :)

I suspect this is similar to the shadow feeding that a Bar Jack will do with a Stingray.

Angelfish and Turtles both eat sponges. I think the angelfish follow the turtles, who are larger and messy eaters. I wached this Angel follow a turtle, and every time the turtle pulled up a piece of sponge or algae, the angelfish would grab some of the scraps.

Here is a Bar Jack shadowing a Stingray, waiting for the Stingray to stir something up.

These were taken in Little Cayman

If I'm not mistaken, the turtles also break through the tougher outer skin of the sponges, which opens it up so that angelfish can get at the insides.
