I just started diving recently and I have been thinking of getting my own regulator and octo and what not. I can rent all my gear for free and don't plan on diving abroad for years I was wondering if it is worth spending the money on a 1st and 2nd stage? If y'all think it's worth the money what are some good brands for a lower cost?

.....I was wondering if it is worth spending the money on a 1st and 2nd stage?

you cant put a dollar sign or worth on your reg's. this is your lifeline under the sea. Of course its worth it. I dont use rental gear, period. I dont know if it has been ragged on, when it was serviced etc. As far as brands....a lot of good manufactures out there, wont go into a "tastes great" "less filling" debate.

good luck!

hold off until Black Friday, you'll see the HOG dealers going absolutely ape$hit on pricing. It's pretty entertaining, but also the source for fantastic deals. The D1 classics should be going for very cheap, though right now they are already right around $200 for a first and second stage, so that's pretty hard to beat.

Where in the world are you? I use Apeks because they are good quality, reliable and great value for money. They are very popular here in the UK and therefore easy to get spares/servicing. HOG seem to be highly recommended on this forum, but I have never seen a set over here.

Go with what works well and what you can get serviced. Also think whether you will need them in cold water.

Just start researching regs, when you find one that you can't do without, buy it. 'Till then you have a sweet deal, where do I sign up?

How often do you dive? Service costs on a regulator can be close to rental costs if you only do a few dives a year.

I wouldn't want to use someone else's regulator. I have mine serviced every year and take very good care of it.

I have a big lake that my dive shop is on and I dive there every weekend sometimes weekdays to. What I'm wondering is sense I can rent gear without cost and don't plan on going and diving elsewhere is it worth it or should I get my own regulator. Which would be a better buy right now? A regulator or BCD?
