Hi, I'm new to diving and have a question about the difference between a regulator and an octopus. Search as I might I just can't seem to find a description of the difference between the two. I assume its something ridiculously easy and simple but not knowing is starting to get on my nerves! Any info would be so helpful!

Octopus is a nickname for your spare secondary regulator

Thanks pir8! I knew it was simple.

Yes it is that simple. Sometimes the backup regulator is "detuned" slightly to resist free flowing. Also most companies normally have a more basic model as the octopus.

Until the term got corrupted the octopus was the ganglia of hoses emanating from your first stage. Contemporary usage including manufacturers have taken the term for your alternate second stage or "safe second"

* An alternate second will be slightly detuned compared to your primary. Otherwise it will be very prone to free flowing in currents when not in use.

* A yellow face or other feature will enhance visibility

*It will ship with a somewhat longer hose (long hose configurations set asside).
