Have no fear... it is easier to "pay off a tank" than you might initially think. Consider this:

Bought a LP-95 tank in early 2005 for $195.

Kept it 16 months. With an air fill costing $5, and a tank renting for $10, I probably saved $120 on rentals. Tank inspection cost me $10 so I really only saved $110.

But... the tank was not discarded. I sold it on eBay for $178. High resale value makes tank ownership economical. For me, owning tanks is money well spent.
 
I total agree. I hunt sometime i do with out because i want good stuff.
I have figured about 550 for the zeagle ranger i found it for sale real cheap because it is a 08 ltd in my size at that.
i set about 500 for my fins goggles, hood, gloves,dive knife and other personal low cost gear.
I have around 800 or so for my reg computer and octo. I plan to wait till may maybe june for the tank. This will properly be the one time i can buy the high end reg. and good computer. So i think i should. I do not see my self not diving or not passing the ow. I love the water and love the idea of diving. I am not one to go into something one foot at a time. I plan to do alot of research between now and march when i go to get my ow. Me and my dad where talking about hitting the dive shop in bloomington to check the stuff out.
More then likly i will wait to get the reg\computer package down in fl when i get ow. Unless scubatoys give me a good deal on every which he said he would

Unless you have all the money to buy high quality gear up front (which for most people isn't the case), this wasting of money is inevitable. What's the alternative to buying cheaper gear to start out? Renting it. And gear rentals aren't free, in fact they seem highly expensive for what you're getting. So you're going to be wasting money either way, at least with buying some intro gear you'll have something tangible you can later sell or use as backup / pool gear; plus even intro gear is better than the rental crap I've dealt with (too many times I've had to dive using my octo because of issues with the primary second stage)..

I"m perfectly fine with spending like $750 for a reasonable BCD, regulator, nitrox computer set. If I have to replace some of those pieces over time because I want better, I'm fine with that. In the meantime it'll sure beat having to rent them. That said, I'm holding off on an exposure suit and tanks since these two items have given me the least issues and I can't really afford to buy even cheaper ones right now.

Oh for sure if you dive enough it will be worth it. However, since most people won't have money for everything up front, tanks seem like one of the better things to continue renting until you can afford your own.

Also, in my case I am currently moving between Seattle (where I dive, but where I have no place to keep anything when I'm not there) and Ontario. So I'd basically have to start shipping tanks through the mail all the time and I'd rather not do that: so for me renting tanks makes sense.

No way, I live in Brantford, and work in Cambridge. We'll have to see if we can get together for a dive sometime. I'm taking my NAUI Tech 1 in April, so I'm looking to get as much in water time as I can to try to perfect all the little things.

P.S. what are you taking in school?

Oh cool, I'd definitely like to dive here some time but bad timing if you're trying to do it before April because I'm leaving here Friday to go back to Tbay for Christmas then I'll be in Seattle for 4 months.

But if you ever want to dive this summer (by which I mean anytime May or later) let me know, because even though I don't have nearly as much free time here as out west, I've just gone 4 months without diving, and it sucks, so this summer I wouldn't mind getting a few dives in. Hopefully I'll be a much better diver and have more qualifications by that point as well since I plan to do a lot out West.

And I'm taking computer science. Worked out really well from a scuba perspective since it got me a nice co-op job out on the West coast that payed well enough that I could dive without dipping into my tuition money :)
