As a recent convert, all i can say is that some day this will (hopefully) become mainstream in all training (sans can light). I am blown away at how easy it is to keep track of gear, stow/deploy, and achieve space on a donation scenario in recreational open water environment. But that is for a whole separate thread.

Also they don't make them that big anymore. :D
 
I had a similar issue to the Op. I switched to a 24" miflex LP hose and a sea cure mouldable mouth piece. That helped a lot with the comfort of the reg.

Then I switched to a 5' hose and it got a little bit better again:)
