I am looking at buying a regulator and wondering how to ensure that the octo is compatible? I am looking at the APEK XTX200 1st and 2nd stage but the only octo for sale is the AquaLung Legend. Are these compatible?

Thanks

Depends on the diving you plan on doing. As far as being compatible, I am not aware of anything that would make regs incompatible. You can have three different manufacturers for your first stage, primary 2nd and backup 2nd. As long as all are adjusted properly there shouldn't be any issue.

Yes, the AquaLung 2nd stage is also made by Apeks (not that it would make any difference if it wasn't)

Both of those products are easily and safely mixed and matched. Personally have several of both of those regulators. Excellent products.
Dive safe.

There are two schools of thought on which octo to use and they both make sense:

1. Use the same octo as the main 2nd stage because you're used to your main 2nd stage and want to keep some sense of continuity.
2. Use the cheapest octo as possible because if you have to use an octo, you're terminating the dive anyway and not sitting there sipping on air, enjoying the ambiance.

Which one is right for you?

I use inline octos, so neither of the above applies to me.

The Legend will work fine on the Apeks.

The only issue should be if the IP spec for the 1st stage is compatible with the 2nd stages. AFAIK, Poseidon in the only mfgr that designs 2nds around IP specs that are out of the range of most other 1st stages.

Correct.
My statement here is not applicaple in the OP's situation but Poseidon second stages are upstream design and require an over pressure valve (OPV). A poseidon second stage won't free flow if the IP goes haywire that is why their first stages require OPV's.
There may be Posedons that are downstream . I don't have intimate knowledge of their entire product line.
