So ... I've been thinking it would be nice to start getting together regularly (once a month perhaps) with other SB members here on Maui. We could schedule dives, BBQ etc.. What do other local divers think, and what day, if any, would work best for you?

We'll see where this goes from here

Aloha, Tim

P.S. if AM or PM makes a difference, specify in your post after voting...

Tim, some of us over in the MOF thread have been planning a Maui Madness trip for the first week in December.

If it's a monthly thing then I'll attend a couple this year :)

We had a Dec. 5 boat dive last year with about 6 SB members travelling here - lots of fun :D

Al - of course visitors are welcome ... but I'm hoping you won't be a visitor much longer to Maui ...

Ideal for me would be late morning dive, followed by afternoon BBQ. Sundays works best as my non-diving wife spends hours talking to all the relatives on the mainland :), but this scuba bum is flexible.

Alternate months at Old Airport and some S. Maui location (Kamaole 3, maybe?) would even out the drive time for everybody.

p.s. I used the tank from last night's canceled Black Rock night dive out at Ulua this morning. So-so viz, temp down to 74F, but a pleasant way to spend the morning.

Glad you got wet - looks like I won't be back in the water for at least a week (or three... travelling etc..)

Alternating locations would be good - Both Airport and Kam III have good facilities - how's the diving at KamIII? - Makena landing is another option out your way too...

btw - non-diving family would be welcome - they can visit topside ...

Aloha, Tim

It's looking like a move is in the works. I have a fish on the hook

Old Airport is awesome in that it has both the diving and the facilities. Kam III has nice table and BBQ, and I can also book BBQ at Kam Sands condos across the street, but the diving is just so-so. Some nice snorkling areas and shallow diving around the rocky point between Kam 3 and Kam 2. For diving, there is a more interesting area off the left point, but it's a bit tricky to find your way around.

Due to closeness to Kihei boat ramp, dive flags really are needed at Kam 3, and the lifeguards enforce that rule. They don't know what a DSMB is and wanted me to have a real flag or at least a torpedo float when they finally caught up with me about the 4th time I dove it last year :).

Ulua wouldn't work due to the parking situation. White rock has the parking and diving, but no BBQ or restroom.

Makena has decent parking and showers/restroom, but I don't remember any tables and BBQ. I'll have to take a closer look next time. Maybe Makena with a portable BBQ?

One other spot I'll check out is the area in front of the Prince hotel. There's public access from the south side, showers & restroom, and IIRC, some BBQs. Ive snorkeled there, but haven't really thought about it as a dive spot. Guess where I'll be diving later this week :)

Hopefully, somebody else (Ya back yet, Gilligan??) will jump in with some place that I've overlooked, like Cove Park or something.

If you know a board member on Maui why not drop them a PM and let them know about this thread too - I'll notify the ones I am aware of...

Aloha, Tim

I went out scouting locations this morning. The Maui Prince beach access has just 3 tables and it's a pretty long haul getting gear to the beach.

Polo Beach turns out to be the winner, so far at least, as a good spot for a S. Maui get together. Lots of parking -- still lots of spaces when I got out of the water around noon. Several tables and BBQs. Shower and restroom.

There is a nice reef going more or less NW from the rocks between Polo and White Rock beach. First time I've gone there, but will definitely return. Just 1 turtle today, but lots of eels including a humongous undulated moray. Both Hoover's and Randalls say "to 3.5'", but this guy had 4+' showing and more tucked back under the coral head.

It looks like Wailea Point reef is also reasonable accesible from Polo Beach.
