My guess would be that he does not know how to service regulators. :shakehead:

Or he just likes all those extra parts in an Oceanic mechanically balanced classic downstream design 2nd which achieve almost the same performance as the simpler pneumatically balanced barrel poppet design used in so many other top-of-the-line 2nds.

Here are 3 mid priced regs that are about as simple and reliable as they come. They all have balanced diaphragm 1st's and balanced 2nds and will perform on par with with their higher priced stable mates.
Apeks XTX 20
Zeagle Envoy
Aqualung LX

LOL Now THAT is funny. I'll take a wild guess: You ARE an Oceanic dealer, but ARE NOT a Scubapro dealer.

I am an Oceanic dealer, but as you see, I never attempted to sell him a regulator. I simply put it out there that ever since Scubapro's designers broke off to form Atomic, their regs have 0 advantages over comparable LOWER priced competitors. :rofl3:

I have certs from more than 5 different companies on servicing all kinds of regulators. This has absolutely nothing to do with the topic unless you advocate cutting out the authorized repair center for a cheap do it yourself fix. The extra parts are only a big deal if you don't know what you're doing. BTW the EOS IS a pneumatically balanced second.

BOTTOM LINE: Buy from your local dive shop, but don't let them talk you into something twice the price for half the features. One advantage the Atomic does have is a 2 yr service interval instead of annually like almost everyone else.

Yes, I do advocate DIY for those with reasonable mechanical abilities. I'm sure there are many excellent techs working in LDSs, but there are also techs who would be sorely challenged to repair a leaky faucet and others who are just not very careful. I've had a number of bad experiences with "professional" shop techs..

But I do agree that the more complex regs are no more of a problem than the simplest regs for those good techs. The bad one are another story.

I also don't believe a customer should pay a significant premium to deal with their LDS. I can see a bit more if the customer perceives a value. But almost twice the price for the same fairly expensive item is hard to rationalize.

Uncle Joe,

First off, "certified" and "qualified" are not the same thing; but as you said, this has nothing to do with the REAL issue. The real issue is you, a dive shop owner/employee, attempted to use a disingenuous tactic to steer potential customers away from a brand of regulator you do not sell. I (sort of ) gave you the benefit of doubt by considering perhaps the SP regulator you "practically threw out" may not have been adjusted properly. But now, I stand corrected, you do know how to adjust regulators….you are just deceitful.

You are in my prayers,

Couv

was also wondering, the inhalation knob upgrade on the legend lx worth the extra dough vs. just the regular legend?

No, the de-tune knob is not worth the extra hundred bucks, unless you're diving really cold water or have to work hard (currents, salvage). It's there to lessen the chance of free-flows. Even my shop manager agrees with that, and he makes money on those sales.

Get the Legend if you like it. Keep it clean and rinsed. Get it inspected annually.
