My step father is in the process of getting certified, and is now looking to get his own regs.

We recommended as always the Apecks, which is what my husband & i use.

His dive instructor recommended the Sherwood Maximus.

We also have a set of Titan LX regs that we no longer used since we upgraded ours...and we can resell him that one for a decent price.

Based on these options...which of the following would you buy?

I'm in the position of having tried all 3. The Aqualung is the driest of the 3, the Apeks breathes the best and teh Sherwood is a wet breather, it has a recall on the 2nd stage and it makes a excellent octopus.

Given the options I'd go for the Apeks.

Given a broader choice I'd go for the Aqualung Legend LX supreme. It's the mother of all regulators to this date in history.

I use Apeks 200's on my doubles. I love the things.

However, depending on the discount, there's nothing wrong with the Titan. I tried one out and was not displeased with it.

Since you mention that its used, I'm assuming that you have a local shop that you are happy with and that will service it.

Actually, it has already been serviced along with the rest of our gear just a couple of months ago, and not used since.

We bought them a while back, but quickly upgraded to the Apecks, since my darling hubby GG has a bit of a compulsion to buy new toys constantly.....*grin*

All input is greatly appreciated.

I use Apeks due to their resiliance and stability. There are few regs out there that have their track record, and that is why those divers who hold all the records and continue to push the envelope use Apeks. Apeks is the only reg I have not seen free flow or freeze in cold waters, and whether I am ice diving or cruising in the tropics, my Apeks perform like champs.

Previously I had a SP MK25 S600 and an Aqua Lung Legend. Both gave me problems, and since my convert to Apeks, not 1 single problem ever.

I think all three are fine choices. I have heard good things from those that use the sherwood. They tend to be real work horses. I guy at a local shop swears by his maximus and prefers it to his poseidons when cave diving becuase it has been so reliable. The apeks are suppose to be great regs but I have yet to really try one. Locally the Apeks are way over priced to me. I beleive the ATX 50 has a list price in the $500 range so I hate to see what the ATX200 would run. If the price is right on the Aqua Lung that would be my choice. However for the price of a new Titan LX you can get an Atomic Z1 which I think breathes much better and has an adjustable second stage.

Out of the choices listed, I would go with Apex.

I personally prefer ScubaPro. They have a balanced diaphram first stage also.

I voted for the regulator that you already own for one reason. It is possible that your step dad will determine that after a few dives, scuba isn't for him. If you have a perfectly good regulator, it makes sense to have him use that for a short time before throwing down $500 on a brand new Apeks first, second, and octo. If not, you might end up with 2 spare regulators instead of one. It is possible (even likely) that he'll love scuba and dive for years, but what will you lose by waiting a few months and letting him get some non-pool dives under his belt? If he's newly certified, I wouldn't recommend a lot of diving where he would really be able to perceive the differences in the 3 regs you've mentioned anyway.
