I am about to embark on my first diving trip in Monterey next weekend. I live in Oakland and haven't dove for almost two years. Though this may be a little last minute, i'd like to know if anyone can recommend a refresher course in or near Oakland.
I saw that Diver Dan has one in Santa Clara, but if anyone knows of one up here, that'd be great.

Hopeful thank you in advance.

The refresher course is a good idea. I once took a two-year layoff
from diving. I didn't take a refresher, but when I came back I felt
really awkward for several weekends, and I think a refresher would
have been a good idea. Most any dive shop can do a refresher
course in conjunction with an OW class, but this is pretty short notice.

There's a pretty complete list of bay area dive shops (if I'm missing
any, please let me know) at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ba_diving/links
The only dive shop that I know of in Oakland per se is Original
Steele's.

Try Nautilus Aquatics in Concord, a little ways from you, through the tunnel then up 680, but not as far as Santa Clara. www.bayareadiving.com They have a pretty big on-site pool, I've never dealt with them though, so I don't know how often they have classes.

I highly recommend Diver Dan's though, with the huge database of instructors, you'll probably be able to pick and choose a class that works with your schedule, not have to adhere to a smaller shop's one.

The other thought might be a refresher dive in Monterey. If you review your OW manual and refresh the concepts in your mind and then hook up with a divemaster or above in Monterey for a refresher type dive. I know a good instructor in Monterey. Let me know if you would like the name.
