Hi everybody!

Have you seen the movie "Pirates of the Carribean"?
There is lots of reefs shown, and seemed to be warm water. I am skeptical about the "warm waters" everyone says that but is it warm, honestly?
Lonely california, I doubt they have reefs along the coast. Do you know about any reefs along "SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA" coast? I want to see a reef so so so so so so bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want to experience the warmth of the hawaiian waters or austraillian currents!!! Please help me!!!
I dream all night about scuba diving hawaii!!! Please help me!!! :dontgetit

Yes, water can be quite warm in the Caribbean, comfortable to dive in a skin year 'round for most, and - there's a lot of coral growing around the islands.
California has "reefs," to be sure, but they're made of rock. The currents off the coast of California - coming down from the north, I believe - are too cold for most hard corals.

Your Profile doesn't say how old you are, or what you do for a living, so I wouldn't know about your possibilities of getting a cheap flight to Hawaii or Florida. If possible, those are good answers. If not, perhaps because you are a young student with little income, hey - be grateful that you have the wonderful diving you have there. Some of us excecute major plans and spend significantly to come vist your waters at times.

Then take care of your help and life development, so you can do the Caribbean dive trips in time.

diverkid,

In the meantime, while you are waiting for your chance to take a "dream trip", consider visiting the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific... you will get a feel for the California kelp forests, but there are also many exhibits of warm-water undersea creatures. You will enjoy it, and it will add to your dreams. Also, you can begin to learn to identify the fish and reef creatures you will someday see in a natural situation. Hang in there, and keep on dreaming

cheers!

Thank you sapphire for your helpful hope, I will still dream though, because, just maybe, one day I will be able to go to hawaii!! Just thinking about it makes me fall back in my chair and dream!!!!

It's still in the 80's here at 100' or so, if that's warm enough for ya. Hawaii is significantly cooler than the caribbean, and less colorful soft corals as well .. on the plus side though, they don't have hurricanes ....

From the sunny warm caribbean,

Darlene

Howdy Kid!

Got your Pm, letting me know that you'd updated your Profile. So, you're a 14 year old Pilot, and a full time bird handler - not a student?! You might also add your Certification Level to in the bio section for future dive discussions, and I include total dives in mine - so others won't wonder if I'm a sophomoric Quarry AOW diver who's never been in the ocean.

If I understand that correctly, then you're just not qualified to travel alone, rent cars, book dive trips and all that. Cheap flights to Hawaii and south Florida from LAX are easy, but many of the aspects of traveling alone and booking dives require one be a legal adult (regardless of emotional maturity) or a legal guardian going with you. So, who do you have for a guardian, and would s/he be interested in escorting you on these adventures? Would you two have the discretionary finances for these? If so, I have many ideas, and Vixen Darlene suggestion of the USVIs is a great one - especially coming from her!!

If not, then you still have much to be grateful for now, and thinking about such gratitudes would help with the frustrations I know you must feel. I'm amazed that a 14 year old can be a pilot at all, for one, and you are quite fortunate that you have enjoyed the means that made you one, as well as the means that made you a diver. Both of those take money, training, accomplishments.

Sapphire's suggestion is good, too, as the LB Aquarium is certainly a fine one. Took my daughter's family to it 1-1/2 years ago, and we all enjoyed it. It may also add to your frustrations, but you may just have to deal with that for a few years, until you can travel alone, or talk your guardian into going.

You might also keep in touch with your LDSs about tropical trips that your guardian might take you on. I dived with some teens in Roatan last summer who'd traveled there with their non-diving parents.

And enjoy those kelp beds. I spend as much to travel there and dive those as I do - or you would - to dive Florida. Coming back out Memorial Day Weekend. Would you like some tips on staying warm in cold water? If so, I'll need your height, weight, and wet suit specs.

Hang in there, don

Warm water? Hawaii? Ummm everyone I have talked to about diving there said they froze there butts off :) Want a warm reef? Hit the atlantic, caribbean, south flordia, etc...

Good luck diverkid. Perhaps I will run into you in flordia one day.

Warm water reefs are really wonderful, but there is something "magical" about the kelp forest off California. Guess it's a personal thing, but I could dive in California waters everyday if I just lived closer.

WOW! You were a great, awesom help!!!! I am a pilot, but have not got a solo yet, (Too busy with SCUBA) I can apply my height and stuff once I find out how tall I am. By the way, what are wetsuit specs?

Thanks a BILLION
