Diver dies following rescue attempt at Totuava Beach

On Saturday, Sept 28, at 7:15 a.m., OC Lifeguards, Laguna Beach Lifeguards, LBFD, and LBPD responded to Totuava Beach, at the 31700 block of Coast Hwy, regarding a diver who had blacked out while underwater.

The diver, a 40-year-old Lakewood resident, was free diving with friends for the first day of lobster season.

According to LBPD Spokesperson PIO Sgt Jim Cota, “He was diving with two friends. All three divers went down and when the two friends surfaced and did not see their friend, they both went back down.”

Sgt Cota said, “They found him unconscious near the bottom. They attempted to pull him up but he was caught on something.”

According to Marine Safety Capt Kai Bond, “On scene lifeguards observed a skin diver floating on the surface at the north end of Totuava Beach about 100 yards off shore. There were other divers trying to assist him to the beach. Marine Safety entered the water and made contact with the non-responsive male adult.”

Capt Bond said, “He was rescued by lifeguards and brought to shore. Lifeguards provided basic life support for Orange County EMS standards. Laguna Fire came on scene and provided advanced life support. He was transported to Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach Code 3.

Sadly, the diver died at the hospital.
