I'm considering a dive trip, & saw a special at reef playacar. I haven't been there but have been to Cozumel. How is the resort & diving in the area? thanks for your input. MV

I haven't been to the Reef Playacar, but while researching our mexico trip , everything says the beaches in and around Playa del carmen were mostly all wiped out by the hurricanes. If you go toMayan Riviera Message Boards, Forums: LocoGringo or www.Playa.info there are some recent pictures of the beach. Some of the resorts have a 6' drop off in the beach. So we have decided to stay farther south in Puerto Adventuras.

Playa is one of my favorite vacation spots. Great town, love the entire scene, and lots to do both in and out of the water. The best diving along the coast is located inland in the cenotes. That is world class diving. The reef diving there just has not impressed me. What the divemasters said was a great dive, was just OK. I will go to Playa in a heart beat, but not for a dive vacation.

If you are thinking about going there in early summer, then the turtle nesting around Akumal is very special, the hatching in August is pure magic. The Centro Ecologico: Akumal, Mexico, Ocean Research, Environmental Education, Sea Turtle Protection, Marine Research are the people to contact.

Ontwreckdiver has already given you the two best web sites for the coast. You might also look at Can-Do Maps and travel guides. If you decide to visit the area the maps are pure gold! Much better than any published travel guide out there.
