:D Okay now that I have your intrest I have a simple question. I am going to be in Roatan in Feb. I am hoping to get in some awesome diving. I do not plan to spend all my time in the water.

I am wondering about fishing off the dock or the shore. What do I need for lures? what will work for bait? I am not one of those fishermen that needs to catch those monster fish that you only take a picture of it. besides where would you find a pan big enough for it. Just as long as I can sit on the dock with a cooler of beer and wet a line I will be happier than a pig in poop.

I am not staying at a resort, or near any dive sites so I am not overly concerned about catching any divers. I'll just throw any that I do catch back, unless of coarse they are keepers.:D

I have been told that there are sardines under the dock so all I have to do is catch a few and I should be set.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

OK,
Here is the way I see the locals do it most often from shore. First thing, No lures, grab some snails, welk, hot dog or whatever for bait at least till you catch anything bait worthy but make sure your not cutting up a juvenile queen angel or something for bait. Leave the rod and reel home, all you need is some line, a plastic soda bottle asome hooks and some 8d framing nails.
Wrap the line around the bottle, leave about 5 feet free with the hook/bait and a nail on the end, get that swinging in a fashion similar to a lasso movement and then when perfect let it go and point the bottle towards the destination.

kinda a late post, have been to and returned from Roatan. brought down a spin cast reel cuz there were suppose to be fishin rods. the rods were for deep sea so I could not cast worth a sh*t. ( had to try). ended up fishing local style with line and a hook on a chunk of bamboo.

worked okay but hard to get the hang of it. only little fish in the cannal in front of our place. next year I am bringing my whole set down to go fishing. and catch a big one that I seen while diving marilyn's front porch. omm nom nom nom nom island style fish are the best.

Shrimp is great bait for snappers, jacks, hogfish will even bite....I've caught snook on shrimp, rays, permit, sheephead... If you want to go a step further, catch a small grunt or snapper (with shrimp) and hook it just behind the dorsal fin above the spine...be careful not to hit bone or he will die quickly...and toss it out there live. You may get a big grouper or snapper.
