Any reason?

I think it's beacuse
#1 they were supposedly fishing for grouper, they must have been prepared to 'catch a big one'. I don't think they would have had the neccessary equipment to catch an 844 pound shark if they were just fishing for grouper.
#2 Isn't shark hunting illegal? I'm sure to many thrillseekers it's great fun as well. They probably covered up their illegal activity by saying they were fishing for grouper.
 
Interesting part of this story is that these guys weren't even going for sharks. They were targeting Grouper and instead got themselves a record Mako. I don't like seeing sharks die, but under the circumstances, I can't really fault these guys. They caught themselves a record fish during a tournament. Here's to hoping that they at least got a feast out of it...

Warsaw is a very deep dwelling fish. Big tackle for them and many people use electric reels. (seems like cheating don't it lol)

Protected species. Practice of finning and filleting at sea prohibited. No harvest of Sawfish, Basking and Whale Shark or Spotted Eagle Rays.

What they did was legal and there choice of sport.
