I am planning a vacation to the Caribbean and
have never been. My travel partner is a
non diver, so I was wondering for those of you
who have been what Island(s) you would recommend
that we go to for good "on shore activities" .
Obviously I would like to do some diving while
I am there but I dont want an exclusive dive vacation
since I am going with a non diver. Thanks.

You might consider Barbados. There is decent diving (be sure to do the PAMIR wreck...and in the morning).....but there are all kinds of great things to do out of the water. Rent a car and just drive to lots of beaches and great things to see.

Just stay totally away from the horse back riding company!!

Grand Cayman. Good all round island with excellent diving. Curacao would be another good suggestion.

Ok. So I have 3 suggestions. Barbados, Curasco, and Grand
Cayman. Which of these most be the most cost
effective. Any other suggestions? Thanks so far.

Heading to Curacao in September, the diving is to be great.. I am also staying at Breezes, and they have things for the non-diver too. Check out www.curacao-sea-aquarium.com it has fun things to offer. Heading into town has the general shopping delights.. If you'd like, just check out this site and you can see what Curacao has to offer www.curacao.com. Lastly here is a webiste on Breezes Hotel www.breezescuracao.com.

Grand Cayman is another hot spot. Beautiful diving adventures and still things for the non diver. You have to check out Stingray city, diver and non-divers can do this. The different places to do that, The original Stingray City and the Crusie Ship Stingray city (LOL) I like the original, but others could disagree. The island has so many places to offer on the dining as well, a favorite spot of mine is www.grandoldhouse.com ($$) other food places you can find in our links and posts... just do a search on Cayman, or look through these threads in the Caribbean area and you'll find may other places.

There are tons of places to check out, even Cozumel would fit in your style.
You didn't really mention weather you liked night life or if you were just the casual sit back and relax vacationer, so these could alter your thoughts.

Good Luck and have a great time where ever you go!

I forgot to add the cost to these locations..

Grand Cayman $$$
Curacao $$
Cozumel $

You might want to look at a cruise. I know there are Western Caribbean cruises where you could get in a couple of days diving in, say, Cozumel and Grand Cayman while the non-diver does something else. It might be cheaper too than trying to fly somewhere from Miami for a week.

Beaches resort in Turks and Caicos. It is an all-inclusive resort, and diving is included in the price. While you are out enjoying the reefs, your travel partner can enjoy the resort. Diving was good, and the boat and crew were great. Perfect for a mixed (Diver/Non-Diver) couple.

Anybody been to both places? Comments on which
they like better and why. Cruises are out b/c of a previous
bad experience (not me!).

What does your partner like to do?

Dominica is a great eco-tourist island. Fantastic hiking to waterfalls and gorges.
St. John has nice beaches, water sports, resorts, very relaxing.
Many others have different topside activities.
