Hello! I have three days to dive in Hawaii at the start of May. Where would you recommend going so I can get to experience the best dive sites? Happy to jump to another location. Main point will be Waikiki but can spend a night on another island. Appreciate any helpful tips!

We dive primarily on Kauai, which is great for turtles and seals. It’s not as “pretty” as some of the other islands as it’s a little colder and more exposed. For a brief stay consider Kona on Big Island. We went with Kona Diving Company who were great. Did the 2 tank evening reef/manta trip which was amazing!

We’ve never been diving on the other islands. I recently spoke with someone who raved about Lanai.

We really loved the big island, and Kona in particular, which is where the Manta Ray dive is. I didn’t get the chance to do it because of weather (hurricane to the south caused incredibly powerful surface waves), but it is supposed to be amazing and I’m going to do it one day 😀. We did do a lot of other dives that were possible and really just loved them. Very healthy and beautiful reefs. Also just loved the laid back atmosphere on that island.

You have stated that you will be on Oahu for part (or all) of your trip. You have 3 days. I have completed approximately 300 of my dives from Oahu, and I'm still discovering new things all of the time there. I don't think, on such a short trip, that I would bother with inter-island flights. Working our way geometrically out from Waikiki, you can walk to the Ala Wai boat harbor, which houses at least one good dive boat, "Cordelia" (HDC). Several other dive boats are based out of Kewalo basin, which is about 2.5 miles from the Waikiki Prince. You could contact Ed at Oahu Travel Divers who can guide you, get you seats on those boats, and show you where the cool stuff is. Either of those two marinas offer easy access to many good dive sites, such as Sea Tiger, Horseshoe Reef, Kewalo Pipe, YO-257 & San Pedro etc. Aaron's in Kailua runs frequent boat dives from east Oahu, and there are two dive shops up in Hawaii Kai, reef pirates and island divers, who go to many of the same east Oahu sites as Aaron's -- corsair, fantasy reef, sea cave if the conditions allow. West Oahu has some of the most beautiful dives but is a long drive from Honolulu -- Underwater Oahu is the only shop on the west side.

All my Hawaiian diving has been done off the W coast of Maui, S coast of lanai, and the Molokini crater. It’s pretty good diving (although those with more time than myself, about twelve years of diving, say it was even better in the past). I’d happily recommend some spots to shore dive off the W side of Maui.

none the less, with only 3 days, I agree with the assessment that you should stick to Oahu.
