I just bought the PBS "Empires" DVD box set and it's very good. (5 DVDs, covering Greece, Rome, Egypt, the Medici family, & Japan). There are other ones (Islam, etc.) available too.

Egypt and Greece are excellent. The presentation and voice-overs for Rome are a bit over-stylized and distracting but the actual content is still very good. (I haven't watched the other two yet). I've read several books on these empires but the videos still filled in some gaps for me. I won't post any links since I don't want to be accused of advertising, but you can easily find out more info if you search the web.
