I simply love the sensation of diving. Being neutral in the water column and free. I used to have a recurring dream of spreading my arms, running down the street and taking flight and I think diving has let me live that dream.

Sure seeing stuff and challenging myself are all fun along with the relaxing sensation of a little extra nitrogen but simply diving does it for me.

You may find this page interesting as well.

  • I love the flying/floating weightlessness sensation, must be similar to what a bird feels in the sky.
  • I love the "zen" feeling of neutral buoyancy.
  • I love the many colors of the coral and the wild marine life.
  • I love how diving humbles me and pushes me beyond my own preset diving limitations. Always thought I was strictly a warm water vacation diver but since cenote dives, I enjoy cold-water quarry and lake diving, also want to do more wreck penetrations, do caves and go tech in a few years.
  • I love the excitement of not knowing what I'll encounter on each dive.
  • I love sharing the dive and the stories with fellow divers.
  • I love learning from fellow divers.

I dive for the same reason I rock climb

"because it's there"
It would be a waste if we didn't see it/do it/experience it

the wow factor :D

it's just beautiful. And peaceful (provided you're not in Piccadilly Circus!). and amazing. getting to know the fish and the corals.

I love the thrill I get when descending when I can't see the bottom, feeling like I'm floating down into a dark unknown place. Then, when I've fallen long enough, the bottom appears in the distance. It's like landing on an alien planet (but we DON'T touch the bottom).

As has been stated several times before me, I enjoy the feeling of floating, of seeing things I've never seen before, of seeing things most people only get to see while watching "The Blue Planet":)

Lastly, the comraderie I feel when surrounding myself with like-minded friends!

I just like the sensation of flying...every now and again, my buddy will let me borrow his scooter, and one of my secret fun things to do is to zoom it straight down the side of an underwater cliff (I feel a little like Superman when I do that :D)

I also like technical things...I like to practice something over and over again until I get it as perfect as possible. I spent about 45 min on my last dive practicing my frog kick, back kick, and mask removal/replacement (all in about 15 feet of water) and was as happy as a clam.

Diving is one of the few sports that you can feel like an explorer, even if you're diving a quarry that you've seen dozens of times. The other day, my buddy and I "got lost" diving the local quarry...we just followed the rock wall until we hit turn pressure...it was a blast!

One of the reasons I love diving is that it's like flying a helicopter underwater -- you can move straight up, straight down, ahead (or even backwards!) You're free in three dimensions in a fascinating way.

Diving has also challenged me, because I didn't find it easy to do (still don't find it easy to do really well), and challenges fascinate me.

The sheer alien-ness of the environment and its denizens intrigues me, too. You don't need to go to another planet to see truly alien creatures -- once you look past the fish, the water is full of the weird and the wonderful.

And the social nature of diving is the icing on the cake. I've made such great friends doing this.

I love diving because it's the one place I can be and enjoy without thinking I should be accomplishing or doing something else. I can hover and spend minutes watching a creature and not be thinking about a million other things at the same time. I enjoy when some of the creatures check me out as I'm checking them out. I like the weightless enviornment diving affords, and the mobility of the up, down, wherever I want to go without gravity controlling me (current is a different issue...lol). It's therapy for me, only hearing the sound of my own slow breathing, and watching the everychanging colors and background of the ocean. The fish, turtles, sharks, corals, etc. fascinate me to no end, and I never get tired or bored. I love diving with new people and watching their faces light up when they see their first moray or colorful fish. Diving with seasoned divers I always learn something new to increase my own skills. And as TSandM mentioned, I have met so many wonderful friends and dive buddies through diving that I possibly would never have otherwise. I could go on and on, but I'm already wishing I were diving now.
