I’m booked for a week at AKR in May... I’ve wanted to go forever, I am finally doing it!We got the BOGO deal and flying on FF miles made this as cheap as Mexico...

So, what should I expect there? Any insider tips?

How’s the food?

Do most people head to the west end to buy their beverages?

How are the dive boats / crew? Do they group you by experience? How many per boat? Diver to DM ratio?

I am staying on a ‘key’ room – will I get sick of the water taxi ride?

Is there a bar @ the pool on the key?

Thanks guys

It's a great representation of what a "real deal" dive resort should be. Plus, there is some modicum of terrestrial entertainment on property.

Caveats: The "shore dive" is in name only, very few even bother, and with good reason. If you have bad knees, the 68 stairs up to dining facility can be a lot worse than the free water taxi ride to the Key. As to that ride- better be sure to bring all you junk with you on the way over for each daily dive. In May, that side of the island can get pretty sultry and that increases bugs. DEET early and often.

Big Plusses: Their boats are modern deep vee Pro Dive style. (perfectly suited to the normal (May-Aug) calm seas on that side. Their DMs are good with all levels of divers (You will not share the boat with the bulk of their clientele- cruise ship divers, but since their DMs can handle that- they're great!). You are very close cab ride away from West End. Most people do not head there for beverage purchases in bulk, most people drink at the AKR bar, but you can shop off property- depending on your balance of drinking versus diving.

Diver to DM ratio? I never noticed, but really what exactly is your concern? I will say this- if you think you may require some underwater SCUBA coaching, it would be far better to hire an additional personal DM (very inexpensive) because the regular DMs are simply not along for that function. They are there to get you on and off the boat safely (along with the boatsmen) and herd you along the reef. If they have time or the skills (many do) they will act as Naturalist Guides. They will be rather distracted doing all of that, and certainly should not be thought of as a Rescue Angel- although they may have the opportunity to perform that function. If you need any attention beyond the minimum, inquire about hiring your own Dive Sherpa- that's what I call them. A good investment.

AKR is in the Top 2 of Roatan's dedicated dive resorts. Highly recommended.

Thanks for the review! So, what’s up with the shore dive?

Knees are good thank God or my waterski season wouldn’t be starting now... Just got to keep the back healthy lol

Good to know on deet – I’ve been hearing about the insects, sounds like they’re riding piggyback...

Glad to hear about the separation from the cruisers. No concerns really, I just mainly prefer to dive with the smaller groups.. As far as coaching, not needed. My GF was just certified as AoW and i’m a DM. I was just wondering if I was going to be on a chaotic cattle boat or not mainly.

As far as drinking, we’re not heavy drinkers, I just don;t like the ‘stick it to ya’ bar tab, know what I mean?

Thanks for the insight Doc!

Me and my gf were just there 3 weeks ago. I miss it!

The water taxi is no big deal. They will either be on your side ready to go or on the other side and take about 45 seconds to come over and get you. 24/7.

The dive boats are roomy and well set up. We had about 10-12 divers on our boat but getting in and out was never slow. We are well experienced divers so never needed or wanted any dm attention. They will do all the work changing out tanks after dives. The sites are close and the boats return to dock after each dive. They seem to group by experience as we had all experienced divers. I know some other boats were mostly beginners and one was full of students.

There is no gotcha bar tab. You don't use cash during the week. Give them your room number when you buy things at the bar, snack shop, gift shop, add nitrox, or any extra activities like dolphin dive, shark dive, or ziplines. Each time you will sign the receipt. When you check out at the end you'll be given an itemized printout of all your charges for the week with the receipts.

Sodas are $2. Local beers are $3 (Port Royal, Imperial, Barena, Salva Vida) and mixed drinks are $6 or $7. 2x1 happy hour most nights except Tuesday and Thursday from about 5-7pm. Certainly not gouging. Still we took a cab to Eldon's in Coxen Hole the first day to get a case of beer and diet soda and chips. Cost about $1/beer each that way but it was more for the convenience than the cost. We just wanted to be able to get out of the shower or back to our room after the last dive and plop into a hammock or patio chair with a cold one and not have to go to the bar. There's a pool bar on the key but it has limited hours, closes at 6pm most days.

I thought the shore dive was ok, worth doing once but we just didn't have the time to do more. We did 18 boat dives. Tanks are at a hut on the reef side of the key. Carry your dive gear there, add tank, and walk out. It's not as long walk as I had heard and about waist deep there's a rope to lead you through several cuts in the reef. Sand is about 55 feet. Most of the boat dive sites were better. When you reach the sand take a landmark or leave a marker. You have to be careful to exit the same path because the reef is very shallow and it would be hard to get back going over the top of it.

The food was good. Limited selection. You had a meat, chicken, or fish entree most lunches and dinners.

Thank you again for the tips! I was thinking to get beverages for the room for convenience as well

Man its 2 weeks away and it cant get here soon enough!

Keep the tips coming!

Question: Any of you regulars that travel to Roatan regularly...

Do you get immunizations prior to travel and if so, which ones?

Thanks

We had a house just east of AKR for 14 years---'94 thru '08---& dived with AKR for 2 years exclusively when our son was working there in the photoshop.......Be sure & do the Barbareta(& forgot about Pigeon Cay...) dive(IF--they still do it), other than that, just have a great time.......

In thinking of some of your questions you asked, I always tended to believe most tourist never(pretty much anyway) left the resort?/......& ..I remember one September(not the time you'll be there), the daily diving crews(our son etc etc) saw no fewer than 20 (single)whalesharks---& --lol, one December we saw 2 off West end(while we were fishing--actually 'hung' one)...............So, you never know what the sea will bring---you......

Nice! Thanks! I am getting a vaccination for Malaria, and I had blood drawn to see what I have antibodies for. I am only planning a trip to west end for a few t-shirts and get some bottled waters, cokes and cocktail supplies.

I have seen the Cozen Hole warnings!

Headed to anthony's tomorrow! Can hardly wait!!
