To use white filter paper to wipe part to avoid "fluff"! I wonder what grade because No 1 is the most common and cheapest but others are available as well.
 
Here is a great video Bryan did on servicing the Conshelf. He uses the new backup washer and no mention is made of the orientation.

If you're not aware, Bryan did a number of service videos on USD/Aqualung and ScubaPro. The vids are all very informative, and when watched along with a copy of a parts diagram, will help ground your understanding of the procedure.
