re: Merida and diving locations

I would like to visit Merida in the Yucatan in the next few months.

Merida is several hundred miles northwest of say Playa del Carmen and I understand that there are beaches in Progresso and other towns on the coast about 30 minutes from Merida. There are also lots of cenotes near Merida (I have N.A.C.D. Cert for Cavern Diving) also.

Does anyone know how the open ocean diving is along the coast north of Merida? I'm not expecting Cozumel-like conditions but was wondering if they are at least decent.

I LOVE Mérida! Most of the earlier threads on ocean diving over there came the conclusions of "pretty much non-existent", unfortunately.
