That did make for an awkward situation where the hydro was filling SCBA's. so close!

$30 was simply usurious for a straight forward VIP and I hope it included a full fill. Was that the posted price? Some shops farm out hydro and mark it up. If you bypassed their farmed out hydro they may have been trying to reclaim margin, still an ugly way of doing business.

Up until recently we had a LDS that did it all onsite and hydro-static tests was done in a weekly batch. VIPs were done as needed. I do have to say that there is something to be said for having one shop fill the cylinder with water and dry it then having another set of eye's make sure the darned thing is clean and dry when it goes into service. We get uptight about wet filling station and VIP at the time of hydro can mean open cylinders and wet stuff all over.

I'm glad you found a reasonable VIP provider. I hope is in the good graces of those who will be providing your fills.

Pete
Thanks Pete. That guy wanted $30 filled for vip only. No hydro. I have heard about some wet hydros from a local guy. My guy does very good job of drying and he is thorough. So hydro and vip is putting me at $35. I can live with that. I won't go back to the previous shop. The funniest part of that experience was, he wasn't able to get the valve off of my tank because the hydro guy torqued it to spec. So he couldn't do the vip. When I returned for my tank he didn't mention giving my money back. When I brought it up, he said that he didn't charge me enough for the wet suit I bought on my first visit! I calmly explained that, that wasn't going to work and he finally refunded me.

That's why I remove the valves from my tanks before I bring them in for hydro. Don't trust them to not nic the valve threads or otherwise screw it up. My hydro shop doesn't want the valves on them anyway. Plus with the valve off I can look inside the tank so when the lds doing the vip says that there is rust and the tank needs a tumble I know if they're being honest.

Not only that, but hydro time is the appropriate time to rebuild the valves. I do that while the tanks are at hydro.

iPhone. iTypo. iApologize.

I live in a remote area in TN. The only guy around to hydro test is the guy that does all the SCBA'S, fire extinguishers and pressure vessels for weld suppliers. He said that he is required to do a visual before and after the hydro test. He does a thorough job and showed me his procedures outlined by his DOT/PHMSA. He is strictly by the book. He says his stamp verifies the visual and he isn't allowed to add any other markings besides his stamp, which includes a sticker. The closest shops, 1 1/2 hours away want $30 to do another visual. Anybody else run into anything like this? On the verge of just getting certified to do visuals myself.

If you would like to get certified in Visual inspections I can help you out.

Just get your tanks filled by the hydro guy and save yourself a 3 hour round trip drive. The VIP sticker is just a scuba industry invention that doesn't really mean much anyway.
