I picked up some gently used equipment on Craigslist, and part of what I got was a Sherwood 'The Source' and US Divers Matrix computers. Which one would be your primary, and which as a backup?

The Matrix and the Source are both Pelagic hockey puck computers and are very similar. The Matrix Master was similar but had a bit more capacity for decompression. Both of the Aqualung computers were air computers.

I think the Source was nearly identical to the Matrix, although I could be mistaken and it may be a nitrox computer.

I had both back in the 90's. They are air only Pelagics. Both of mine failed--the Source twice, the Matrix 3 times. Either will be fine as long as it is working properly.

Ok, so, what is an 'air only Pelagic'? From what I gather, they tell depth, and rate of ascent, and when I should fly. In layman terms, what else do they tell me?

Pelagic refers to Pelagic Pressure Systems. A company owned by Oceanic that develops and manufactures dive computers (among other things) for many of the SCUBA equipment companies out there (like Sherwood). "Air Only" means that the computer is only able to give you decompression information or NDLs based on your use of air and not on Nitrox.

The below link should help with the Source. I've never used a Matrix.
