2003 Gypsy Christmasfest traditional fund rasing event NC !!
The Gypsy Christmasfest has been a tradition as long as there has been Gypsy Divers, since 1984. This year the event will be held on December 12.The first Christmas parties were held at the VFW hall in Cary and were potluck dinners for 40 or 50 people. Last year 130 people attended the event.
The party will start at 6:30PM on Friday, Dec. 12, with dinner being served buffet-style at 7:30. Tickets are $15 per person and must be purchased in advance at Gypsy Divers. The grand prize this year is your choice of the gypsytrips currently on the calendar for 2004. Other prizes include a new Scubapro Equator travel BCD, a Henderson wetsuit, an Atomic regulator, an Oceanic BCD, and a whole lot of other fun dive items.
Every dinner ticket includes one raffle ticket, and additional raffle tickets can be purchased for one dollar each. The chosen charity for 2003 is the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences Educators of Excellence Fund, with all profits going to that agency.
In 1989, the club started using the Christmasfest as a way to raise money for the North Carolina Coastal Federation, a great grass-roots citizens group fighting to restore and protect our fragile and threatened coastal habitat. In 1998, because of the devastation in Honduras caused by Hurricane Mitch, money was donated to hurricane relief efforts in that country.
In 1999 all of the money raised went to the NC Dept. of Agriculture to assist eastern North Carolina farm families devastated by the floods of Hurricanes Dennis and Floyd. In 2000, gypsy divers donated funds to the YWCA for community programming. In 2201, it was the Raleigh Rescue Mission. In 2002, it was the Make-A-Wish foundation. This year it will be the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science Educators of Excellence Fund.
Gypsy Divers raises the money for these non-profits through the sales of admission tickets, raffle tickets and the silent auction. Raffle tickets are available in advance at Gypsy Divers or until raffle-time at the event. Silent auction items can be bid on right up until auction closing. You must pay for your item and take it with you that night, so make sure you bring your cash, checkbook, or credit cards.
Typically, the admission ticket covers the dinner costs, and all of the money from the door prize ticket sales go the charity, as will all of the money raised in the silent auction. Last year the group raised $1,800 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and had a great time in the process.
