Dumb question perhaps, but those of you diving a 5' or 7' long hose for your primary... how do you keep it up against your right side when your diving without a can to tuck it under, i.e., how do you prevent it from flapping way out to the side when you lift your right arm. Thanks.

Well I dive with a can light but I I'm not super tall so to avoid a little excess hose bunching near my head and wrapping around my tank valve I also place it under the knife on my left side. So it goes from the tank down my right side under the can light across me, under the knife and up and around into my mouth. Could you utilize something like a knife sheath to keep it in place?

If nothing else, then gently tucking it in the waste band of your harness is all I can think of. Just of course practice deploying it a few times to make sure it isn't too "stuck"

If I am not using my can light I will install a "D" ring and clip the snap that would normally be used for my regulator to the "D" ring.

Hm hadn't thought of that. I suppose theres no harm in having another bolt snap tied on to the hose all the time.

It is typical to have a bolt snap on the long hose all the time. The purpose is to be able to snap your regulator to your harness when you are using gas from your deco bottles. That way you know were your regulator is, and it won't be flopping around in the water.

I am glad I could help.

I've always seen one bolt snap up close to the regulator, never knew what that was for. Is that generally fixed in place, or is it something you could slide down the hose? I assume if you're diving a single tank with no deco you'd only need the one snap a couple feet down the hose. Thanks.

The intent of a bolt snap near the reg on the long hose is to allow you to clip the reg off to the right shoulder D ring when you are using a stage or deco reg.

A bolt snap on the hose near the waist belt seems to me like an impediment to speedy deployment of the long hose in an emergency. If you do it, use an o-ring passing it trhough the eye of the bolt snap and then run the hose through the two looks that are created. It will provide some drag to keep the snap in place but more importantly it will break away with a sharp tug you will not have to have to mess with unclipping the bolt snap with an OOA diver on the reg end of the hose.

Better yet (and simpler) just tuck the excess hose under your waist strap if you do not have a can light with you. It will just pull free when you need to deploy the hose.

As an aside, with the bolt snap near the reg, I attach it using a large o-ring (about 1/8" by 1.25".) Loop it through the eye of the snap, then run ne loopp through the other and stretch the remaining loop over the mouthpiece and slide it down to the base of the mouthpiece. It will stay secured when clipped and will also pull free of the o-ring in needed real bad with no need to unclip the bolt snap - which will stay clipped to your d-ring.
