Emma, relax.

That is the most important advice I can give you. You'e intelligent enough to ask excelent questions, and adventurous enough to want to dive. You're also inquisitive enough to go to college. I'm guessing you have what it takes to be an excelent diver if that is what you want to be.

The course is not hard, you just have to pay attention and be open to the information. As far as the swimming goes, this is going to sound silly, but I know quite a few accomplished divers who cannot swim at all. One commercial diver that I trained with could not swim, I had to teach her to do a survival float so she could pass survival training. (I'll not mention her name as she actually holds a record and could be easily looked up, and she'd be quite embarrases if anyone found this out about her)

Have fun, and learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of the people arround you, you'll do fine.

Hi Emma,
You must be bored reading all these replies. I'm keeping it simple.

1. Relax throughout the confined classes.
2. You will freak out during the classes, especially trying to descend and ascend. Just remember to equalise and say 'ahh' when ascending.
3. Do everything slow and relax.
4. If in doubt, don't do it, just ask your instructor.
5. You will get dizzy while coming up and down. Take your time becuz your body is not used to it.
6. Don't drink before diving classes, it makes all symtoms worse.

Good luck and enjoy it. I took 1 month to get the OW so it's not difficult

I think that last reply hit it on the head....It's easy and fun. This is a FUN thing, not a hard thing. Your floating in water, how much of a jock do ya need to be? Jump in and enjoy! We will expect to see you here in a few weeks looking for advice on all the new gear you must buy for your new underwater life. Keep breathing!
