My GF's brother has offered to give me a Beuchat BC + Regulator + Safe Second + Gauge kit. Super generous.

From what I understand, the quality of these are very nice. It would be my first set of kit and makes getting into Scuba much more approachable as all I need are my mask/snorkel/fins and dive computer after this.

However, I know that Beuchat closed shop in the States.

Any reservations about using this gear (quality, etc.) or having it serviced? How might I go about servicing this when it is needed? Would I need to fly to Europe to do so? Is self servicing an option if I take it upon myself to learn (my understanding, correct me if I am wrong, is that if I had parts a shop here COULD service it, but WOULDN'T due to liability issues).

I am in the Pacific Northwest. Getting hooked up with some nice kit like this is SUPER nice, just want to make sure I am not putting myself in a bad situation with gear that can't be tested for safety or worked on here...

Thank you!

A couple of things to clarify:
1) Are you being given it used or bought for you as a present? If it is coming as a used set, accept it and use it until it needs serviced and then purchase some new regs (even sell yours on but noting they require servicing). If it is being bought for you as a present, slightly more difficult but ask where it was from as the shop that sells it may service it or know of a location that will (possibly an independent tech).
2) Testing it is different to servicing - so long as it passes a few basic checks (linky), you are pretty much safe to dive.

I should clarify that the above only applies to the regs, the BCD should be serviceable anywhere as all that will be done is probably a pressure test, quick check of the straps and buckles and strip & rebuild of the dumps and inflater.

Self servicing is an option - try the regulator thread for advice as there are a lot of people in there that do self servicing.

It would probably be an option for me if my chosen dive shop didn't only charge £70 for a set (reg, octo and first stage including parts).

If I remember correctly Beuchat is either out of the US market completely or has very few dealers now. Getting the regs serviced may be a bit difficult because of scarcity/lack of parts kits and finding a shop to service them.

You can look up their resellers if they still service them:

Find your Beuchat shop, scubadiving gear, spearfishing | Beuchat

I beleive they are still sold here in Quebec, Canada... main reseller is TotalDiving (I know they did 3 years ago). * No bashing but I would not recommend.

If you need an "Online" shop that can service it

I know scubageek.ca used to service them
