Hi I am new to diving and am buying my first set of gear. My setup includes a backplate and basic harness, but i was wondering if the QLR 32# weight pockets are compatible with them

I've been told that they aren't the greatest for this type of setup and i wanted verify it.

So if someone can help me out it would be great!

Also, would a deluxe harness be better? I've heard discussion of "increased failure points" and whatnot and the deluxe seems easier to get in an out of.

:)

Hi Turtleso,

Good questions. Our QLR 32lb Weight Pockets will work with a Basic Harness, however you'll need to add either a plastic belt slide or D-ring in front to keep it from slipping forward (placing the pocket near the back of your waist next to the plate.

Failure points is a controversial concept that in most applications has more to do with marketing than reality. If you are a cold water diver, you'll benefit from the advantages of a chest strap as well as the fit of the Deluxe Harness. The extra hardware and Delrin buckle of the harness are not failure points.

Hope this helps,
Kathleen

Just use a regular weight belt. I've gone the weight-pouch-on-BP/W route. It's not great.

I believe one of the conventional thoughts is to have a seperate weight belt that puts you neutral sans exposure suit. Next weight your BC to compensate for buoyancy gained/lost during the dive which is usually the amount of air you breathe plus/minus suit buoyancy. What is left is a wing big enough to float your BC.

If you are diving steel tanks you probably won't need any extra weight. Certainly double steels will not require any additional weighting unless you are also wearing a dry suit, then it's a whole different issue.

I use the deluxe harness. Failure points is at best a lot of hot air. I had to add a quick release to get out of my BP/W easily. I dove a single web harness for a while and found it adequate. The deluxe harness gives me more flexibility.
