My wife and I are on our 4th cruise since I started her addiction when we got married. This year should be different, we should have our C-card in hand when we go. We are taking a Carnival Cruise out of Galveston. We want to do a diving excursion. They have a dive in Cozumel, Mexico with Sand Dollar.

Has anyone had any experience with Sand Dollar? Thanks for your input.

Cheers.

what time do you arrive in cozumel?
You can always book your own diving with a shop/op of your choice.

We did a cruise to Coz last year and booked our own diving through AquaSafari. Thay had their shop and boats close to each other and close to the cruise ship ports.

I always make my own arrangements to dive Cozumel, so I don't have any personal experience with Sand Dollar. I have read varying reports however, some of which aren't very positive. It would seen that they use large boats which can hold a large number of divers. Large boats don't always mean large groups, but I'd rather avoid that as it isn't my cup of tea. I prefer small boats/small groups. I would expect that the dive would be a follow the leader kind of dive, typical of the drift diving in Cozumel, with a predetermined bottom time since most cruise divers probably don't have computers.

Seriously, you could do a lot better if you make your own arrangements.

Personal favorite is Christi's Cozumel Diving: Blue XT SEA Diving, Cozumel Mexico

Others I would consider as a cruise diver are:

Of course, if your ship arrives later in the morning, like after 9:00 am, it will be more difficult for you to arrange a private dive trip, so you may end up with the ship's excursion after all, which is still much better than not diving at all.

We did the 4 day Ecstacy cruise last Feb. & by the time the ship cleared Customs & we were able to get ashore, it was too late to catch any of the normal morning dives. We had reserved the ship dive just in case that would happen. They didn't use Sand Dollar at that time though. In the past, we have always set up a private charter using Dive w/Martin. It's around $300 for up to 4 divers & you get your own boat & divemaster.....pricey for just 2 though. You might check the Cruise Critic forum & check the Roll Call thread for your specific cruise & see if you can find another diver or 2. On the ship excursion last Feb. there were about 18 divers & they split us up into 3 groups of 6...each with a divemaster. We dove Palancar & Tormentos. One other thing about Dw/M, if you do the charter, you will be on a fast boat & be able to get to the dive sites quickly & go to one of the Beach Clubs in between your dives. They will also provide your gear if you don't have your own.

Do Blue XT, I did Sand Dollar Sports with Royal Caribbean in Sept and had an AWFUL experience. If you search "sand dollar sports" you'll find several posts about them. It's about 50/50 of people that have had good experiences and bad...50/50 are terrible odds. I've always heard great things about Blue XT. I am doing another cruise in March and I've booked all my own dives, I'm never trusting the cruise line again.

I see your point. I just read one thread, about a leaking tank o-ring and the DM basically saying don't worry about it. :no

That is not what I need. Especially since this will be my wife's and my first carribean dive. I think I will go with Dive With Martin and reserve a private charter. I think she will like that much better. Plus I remember reading their excellent reader review in Scuba Diving Magazine.

Their website states:
"Confirmed Reservation:
The full payment of $300 is required to guarantee a reservation. This reserves a private charter for up to 4 divers for a two tank dive. Additional divers can be added at the regular daily dive rate. The deposit is fully refunded given 24 hours notification.
"

I'll pay the extra $$$ for a private charter for the both of us, instead of dealing with a 50/50 business.

Baaaaa, don't go with them! I'd never heard of them until last week. Someone posted a TERRIBLE review about them. Said the locals call it "Die with Martin." Do a search...if you can't find it I'll try to help you locate it. It was an intro post. I think Blue XT is the way to go. I hear nothing but good stuff about them here on SB.
