Splitlip,

My safety sausage is completely open at the bottom (and has a little netted pocket at that end). I guess that means that if I don't deploy it correctly underwater and it loses air at the surface, I could always orally inflate it or even use my octo?

Thanks for the link. My safety sausage looks similar to the one on the top of that page
(I see what looks like a dump valveand I guess that's the oral inflator at the bottom). Was wondering what that "holder" on the top right is for? I have one on mine too.

Splitlip:
I can't tell either. This link however will give an explanation of the three basic designs.

It is intended to accept a chemical glow stick, for better visibility at night.

or you can stick a page from your dry notes in there too... eg. send down more gas, etc.

I guess the easiest way to tell is inflate orally now on the surface. If it holds air, it is either closed or semi closed. You already said it is open on the bottom, so I would say you are "semi" closed.
Open you inflate with exhaust and will empty if you don't keep tention on it. Closed is inflate with mouth or by connecting a LP hose and has to be emptied with the OPV dump. Semi closed has a duck bill 1 way flapper inside the opening at the bottom. You can usually see bell sheped stitching there. It is "best" of both worlds.
DAN markets a tube with a pocket on the bottom to store mirror whistle etc.
As others have said, the clear sleeve is designed for a glow stick, but can be used for other things.

6. Take another couple of breathes to steady yourself, and repeat the exhale process, but this time let the bag go. You can hold the spool between thumb and fore-finger, but you should be able to simply make an OK signal around the line. The spool will unwind, and magically stay just in front of your face. But as soon as the SMB hits the surface, the spool will start to drop down.

Only works for delrin/plastic spools. If you are using a stainless steel spool, keep a hold of it- otherwise itll magically drop into the depths while your buddy laughs his *** off...
