Looking for anyones experience on how to position a strobe....

Using an S80 with Ikelite housing - very good results just using the internal flash with no add on lens, but, I recently got an add-on Inon WA lens (which blocks the internal flash) therefore need to be using the strobe - so using my DS-50 (with slave TTL sensor) on the first dives with the WA lens attached - the flash was washing out the colors on quite a few of the photos.

so questions are:
- how is the best way to position the strobe (how far away/angle/ direction is should be pointed)
- am i simply too close to the subjects (I though the whole point of the WA was to get closer)

any helpful comments would be appreciated (and I'll try them out next weekend !)
