I probably should of asked this question a long time ago. I am certified with PADI(OW-Rescue) and NAUI (AOW) I noticed on my PADI card I have a diver number. On my NAUI card my name is on the card but no diver number just the Instructors name and the Instructors number. Is this correct? When I fill out paperwork for diving all to often the cert agency and diver number are asked for. I do not know what to put since there is no diver number on my NAUI card.....

Yes, it is correct. NAUI uses your social security number- which your instructor put on the registration form- as your identifying number with NAUI HQ.

Hope that helps.

Thanks... I do not feel comfortable putting my SS# on the diver release forms. I guess I will leave the # section blank... I have been wondering this for awhile just never got around to asking...

Sorry I missed this a few days ago... NAUI no longer asks for your SSN, but does request an ID number of some sort. Many folks use the numeric form of their birthday as the ID; its simple, and the probability of there being two NAUI divers named Mary Smith born on 02/02/62 is pretty slim.

I was never asked for any such identifying number for my NAUI card. And there's nothing on my card. Hmm.

Of course, with my last name, I don't think they'll have a hard time finding my records...

Never really thought about it, but have always done it the way I saw others do it; write "PIN" in that space. Never had a question about it from a dive boat or a shop doing air fills.

NAUI doesn't assign a number until you reach DM or above status.

Even though I have a NAUI ID number, I always just leave that part of the release form blank. Operators are aware that NAUI doesn't use ID numbers, and I've never had any difficulties leaving that part of the form blank ...

Until recently I was the NAUI Rep for the carib.

In the past they used SSN for student registrations, now they do not. They use a PIN that the instructor is supposed to make up, lots don't bother so HQ makes one up which the diver doesn't know. Thus they mostly look you up by name and birthdate.

Member numbers are a different breed however. Until a few years ago someone would have a seperate DM/AI/SDI/Instr number on file for each level of NAUI membership. In fact by knowing a persons instructor number is a good way to know how long they may have been teaching. A few years back the computer system changed and all leadership are assigned numbers they keep. Thus this is no longer a way to tell how long somebody has taught as they may of had the number from DM 5 years ago and just become an Instructor, the number doesn't change.

I know alot of this information was above but this is the "real" story.
