Hi, I am going out on this boat this Saturday out of Ventura, CA. I just ran into the first experienced diver to have anything bad to say about this boat. Can I get some feedback on what you all think about it? The criticism I got from this individual was that the boat smelled and the bunks were uncomfortable.

What say you?

Well, it ain't a millionaire's yacht, so yes, the boat smells and the bunks aren't the best. However, I never went on the Spectre for sleeping purposes so I never really cared if the mattress weren't TempurPedic standards. Consider that they'd let you sleep overnight FOR FREE thus saving you money on hotel/motel spending, I'd dare say that the bunks are damn good.

The Spectre is my third favorite of all SoCal dive boats. YMMV.

I've been on it twice. Honestly, not a favorite. Last time we went, it wasn't even full according to them with 35 divers. That's because they have dive stations on the bow. Purely packing more divers on the boat. Who wants to walk the sides of the boat in full gear and wet?!! Another serious problem I had was the rushing. Last two dives they said they were only opening the gates for 15 minutes because conditions might change. No kidding....that's the case with virtually any site! They just spent too much time finding a good 1st site and wanted to get home on time. Food was great, though. Bunks are typical...thin pad. I'm not looking for sealy-serta on a dive boat. End result: If they're ever going out with less than 30 divers, I'd be game. More than 30, count me out. I don't do cattle boats.

I don't have a problem with their boat even when it's full. We always arrive the night before and find spots near one of the exits, so our walk is minimal. We tend to be (among) the first in and last out. Bunks are comfortable enough. Food is ok (nothing stellar, but certainly edible, and filling). Captain Ted works *very* hard to find the best dive sites given the conditions.

Go on Friday trips.;)

BTW, did I mention that the Spectre has a freshwater hot tub?

If I'm out on a friday I'm all about the Magician. My #1 boat in So Cal.

Their hot tub is the literal version.....a tub of hot water. If more than 4 people (of the 30+) get in, you'll know them very well by the time the boat docks. Fortunately I dive dry so this isn't much of a selling point. LOL

One of the things I've learned to appreciate a LOT is tank bungees on hooks rather than tied at both ends (as in Spectre). That way tank size doesn't matter and it can be secured by the tank neck even while your 1st stage is on it. For the number of divers, the galley is small. Take your meal up top to eat. His tri-tip last time out was excellent, hence my earlier food comment.

Regardless of when you get there, you'll have to deal with walking through the crowd either getting to the gates or to your cubby hole after the dive.

The Spectre is not the Hilton that's for sure, but for the price: 4 dives at nice sites, 2 meals, plenty of snacks, a functional bunk for over night stay and a great crew = money well spent!

Boy, folks have some high expectations for Channel Island boats.

I was on last Sat. Bunk area has been refitted and no smell with new pads. Yes they are still bunks but what the heck, its better than paying a hundred at the 4 Points for a night. I actually look forward to getting there the night before, getting set up, getting dinner and talking with the other divers.

The boat can get a little crowded but its easy to deal with. You can also go off the stern but most people don't know about it so the gates can get crowded with anxious divers. That only lasts for the first 2 dives and then everybody starts getting tired and the whole process of a big giant stride slows down. And yes, I still prefer Friday's because there is less of a load and usually more experienced divers.

I've been diving on that boat for 15 years so I guess its like a comfort zone for me. I know that Ted will always take care of us and will always find the best possible spots, even if he has to travel the entire circumference of Anancapa and over to Santa Cruz. I have been on the boat many times when we got back late to the dock.

Tri tip was tasty as usual. Breakfast has evolved over the years and since the $120 cost is all inclusive, breakfast is more continental now but you still get the Mc Diver breakfast sandwich.

The vis last week was not great because of the swell direction(s). They hit the island from all directions. We didn't even get over to Santa Cruz. Ted tucked us in some spots that were as protected as possible. Vis was 25' on first dive and 10-15' on the other 3. We shared the same areas on the back side of Anacapa with Vision, Peace and Explorer and I think Raptor. The water temp was 61F on the surface and as low as 59F at 50'.

One good thing was the crossing was smooth out and back; thanks to the long period swells.

Everyone on the boat had a great time even with reduced vis. We all saw stuff that we normally wouldn't see and it didn't rain on us! In fact, the weather was perfect.

Go and have a good time!
