I'm a new diver (<10 post cert.) and went on a trip out to Cozumel in December.

Well, as well as being a diver, I'm going through school as a music student training to sing opera professionally. The practice of singing has given me a MASSIVE lung capacity. I have been doing the slow inhale/exhale and that has given me a significantly increased bottom time, but it screws with my bouyance too much. I can comfortably inhale for a count of 8-12 seconds and exhale for 10-15 seconds easy. This slow deep breath changes my body dimensions and bouyancy so significantly that I move a good 2-3 feet either way during a breath cycle, turning me into a human yo-yo (or a whale that's about to breach).

My question is this, I'm enjoying the extra bottom time that this deep breathing gives me, what can I do to further stabilize my bouyancy? Right now I have to use my kick to keep me from bobbing. I'm well weighted (or at least imagine that I am), and have no other ideas.

Grazie,

Hi Polsvoice, Your breathing seems to be fine and singing has enabled you to breath correctly. Actually, time is the only thing that will help in that department. The more you dive, the more you will become acclimated to balancing out your bouyancy and breathing. Be patient and keep diving. Breathing SLOWLY and not Quite as deep will help. Also, your breathing will eventually control your bouyancy and then you use your breathing to give you more or less bouyancy.

Hopefully other other members that are more experience then I, will post a more technical answer to your dilema.

As Uncle Pug is saying, You don't need to take deep breaths. This acts like putting air in your BC. Just breath slowly.

With time, this will become 2nd nature.
