Thanks for answers to my previous queries.

The Wikipedia page for ABLJ redirects to Buoyancy compensator (diving) - Wikipedia , which gives these names for them or for some sorts of them: buoyancy compensator, buoyancy control device, BC, BCD, stabilizer, stabilisor, stab jacket, wing, ABLJ .

What is the modern usual specific name for the old type of separate inflatable diver's self-rescue float as seen at these next two links, to distinguish them from other more modern diver's buoyancy control devices?: http://asor.free.fr/theorie/MaterielAncien/fenzy/fenzy_x3/fenzy_x3.jpg , https://www.retrade.eu/i/detail/1295651-2998 (2).jpg/38_stk._opstigningsveste_model_Fenzy.jpg . Does ABLJ "adjustable buoyancy life jacket" mean them only, or other devices also? Is there a modern non-acronym specific name for them?

When I started diving, we called them diver's lifejackets; stabjackets and wingses had not yet appeared in the shops here in England.

Who makes them nowadays?

A Fenzy was called a very unique and surprising name, "Fenzy" :) It wasn't called a horse-collar, it was called a Fenzy to make it distinct from the standard horse-collar.

Aqua Lung still makes a similar device for the military. You simply don't see this style any longer in recreational diving.

I don't see why you couldn't buy them, other than them being built to military specs and in small numbers might make the price prohibitive.

I believe SeaTec builds one as well, at least they did several years back for military and Public Safety Divers.

Could a civilian buy one? They are not weapons, and not an infiltration device, so I see no need for a restriction on who has them.

Aqua Lung Public Safety

I am not an expert on the rules, but my understanding is that the dealer must be classified as a Military or Public Safety Dealer to be able to order these. I believe they are also restricted to who they can sell them too. Hopefully somebody with more knowledge on the restrictions will chime in.

I still see it. I have a couple of dive buddies who dive the Sea Tec model.

I guess I should clarify...you rarely see it being sold at recreational dive shops. I remember diving with this style in the early 80's. I then upgraded to a Scubapro Stab Jacket in '84 when the dive shop I was working at on weekends let me pay for it over time.

Looking at the SeaTec catalog, they do still list the SEATEC MILITARY SUNFISH N0. 1040.

Looks like you can order one off eBay today if you like...
