Hi all,

I am looking to try and get some sort of ticket that says i have the ability to service an outboard engine or at least have attended some sort of practical experience class. I have a job to aim for next year where having some sort of proof will help my chances. I already have experience in general maintenance and trouble shooting having worked on charter boats and currently completing a 6000nm voyage across the pacific where we have had to drain oil, change fuel, clean spark plugs etc and I have done a RYA Lvl 2 Powerboat course.

Does anyone know how to look for these courses as im not having much luck looking at the moment. I will soon be based in Northern Queensland so would like to start looking round there first but any advice on where to start looking would be great.

Outbboard maintenance courses are usually offered in the TAFE (i.e. Technical And Further Education) sector in most Australian states & territories. If you search "TAFE outboard maintenance, queensland", you will be able to find pages such as the following:

Automotive training programs and courses - Automotive training programs and courses - SkillsTech Australia. BTW, Marine courses at the bottom of the page.

and...

Certificate II in Marine - Certificate II in Marine - SkillsTech Australia.

and...

Vocational & Training outboard course at Tropical North Queensland TAFE - Training courses at Tropical North Queensland TAFE & all Tropical North Queensland TAFE courses Australia

Cheers 257a, ive got an email off to them now. However im not hopeful for the TAFE as being a Pommie I don’t get charged local rate. Last course I tried to do there (VHF) was $100 for locals or over $400 for me!

The Volunteer Marine Rescue Service do the VHF radio license course for anybody at $60/ doesn't matter if your a tourist or what!
