I'm on Malapascua right now! The island is functioning normally but Gato island is closed for a month due to safety risk. The most affected area is near Bogo. When I came up from Cebu city the traffic was really bad because of all the relief efforts. Many locals were standing roadside holding signs that say need help with food and water.

Just curious, but do you have more info on the “safety risk “ driving Gato island closure for a month ? I am definitely not arguing with you given I have never been to the area and have no immediate plans to visit, I am just genuinely curious what “safety risk” means in this particular instance.

uniformed guess (hey, it's the internet), there is normally some diving in caverns on Gato island. I can imagine those being potentially a risk due to a quake. Or at least needing to be checked out.

Gato is a pointy island that sticks out from under the water. The most famous site there is a cave/tunnel. Earthquakes might cause the rocks to fall off the cliff or the cave to collapse, so you don’t want that to happen while you are right underneath.
