Quad and user conservative settings

I have a Quad [and a Puck]. I like both units. Can you shed light on the personal safety factor options? There isn't much in the manual.
I understand my dive profile will effect it, but is there a % in the difference between the 3 settings?
Or, is this a 'trust me, it's a bit safer' option.
