Q from Doc Wong on Artificial Reefing

Hi,

I'm in charge of the efforts to create artificial reefs in Northern California (Monterey) and the Navy has come forward and offered us a ship, a submarine called the Sailfish. It's up in your neck of the woods, in Bremerton.

In doing a bit more research, there are other ships decommissioned there. So my question is: are there efforts in your area to sink some of these ships?

The fact that they are in Bremerton and you have quite an active diving community there, I would think there is. I'd like to find out what activity there is in your area regarding this.

Re the Sailfish, where would you put it in Monterey? I imagine there would be a bit of flack associated with that area being a marine sanctuary . . .

Yes, it's definitely an uphill battle to get something sunk in the Monterey area, but we're also putting ships down in Eureka and the Ft Bragg area.
