Pura Jati and Secret Bay (Bali)

Hi everybody,

I am going to Bali on Christmas and I already have arranged one week diving in Tulamben, Amed and Seraya.

I am trying to find the best and cheap way to dive in Secret Bay and Pura Jati, as we are macro life fans but seems there is not many information. Seems the only way to dive in PJ is staying at Zen Resort ::: ZEN RESORT BALI :::, but the accomodation (and I suppose the food) is too expensive there, and we are diving all day, so dont need so much luxury and wellness. Also, the Mimpi Resort near Secret bay is out of my budget.

I thought about staying in Lovina and do day trips there, but seems diving operators there don´t have Pura Jati as an usual place to go. I had problems in the past with Lovina diving operator, as they always went to Menjengan, and I don´t plann to go there again.

Maybe Pemuteran would be a better choice for the day trips to Pura Jati and Secret Bay???

If there´s time enough, I would like to go diving with Manta in Nusa Penida, but I read somewhere that in december-january the sea can be very rough and very bad visibility.

Anybody can help me with some information???

Even I have been diving in Bali before, I always get confused trying to arrange trips there.

Puri Jati - pls check this new resort, Bali Nibbana Resort

Secret Bay - there's several budget resort less than USD10/night & dive shop at Gilimanuk on the way to ferry terminal; can't remember the detail, no website.
More choices at Pemuteran - all dive operator there can ararnge diving to SB.
very unlikely all fullybook.

Pemuteran is in the middle of the two, easy to do day trips to both Secret and PJs from there. about 45 mins by car to either one. They will bring pack lunches etc for you.

We stayed in Lovina in August (low-er season) and did a day trip to PJ from there. As I recall it was $55 for most places for equipment, lunch, and two dives.

Of course, its Bali, and the only way to get what you want is to have a lot of patience and bargain. Touts are everywhere, and they all want you to go to Menjengen to dive. Keep at it and you'll find a place if you turn up in Lovina.

I ended up bargaining $60 for two 60 minute dives at PJ down to $50 for two unlimited time dives at $50. The guide surprised when we did two 2 hour dives!

I've been staying at TamanSari in Pemuteran for diving Secret Bay. There is a dive operation on the property, but haven't used them. They could probably dive you at SB & PJ's.
Bali Taman Sari
This year I stayed at the new Nibbana Resort near Puri Jati. Next to Zen. Great setting & large rooms. A lot more convenient than staying in Lovina or Seririt.

Finally I´ll dive Secret Bay and Pura Jati from Nibbana resort, it´s very convenient for diving in Pura Jati and quite enough luxurious, and been so near let me do even 4 dives a day.

OralDouglas and Mike Veitch, thanks also for your help. I wrote to Pemuteran and Lovina dive shops and they answerd me that they cannot ensure me to go to those places. In fact I think most divers prefer corals more than muck diving so I can undertand that.


What about Padang-Bai ??
Any favourite dive site, dive shop and hotel??

For anyone else reading the thread;
Dont forget that youve got a lot more sway with local shops if you turn up and ask to go to PJ, SB than if youre asking for it through email. Lots of places would rather tell you a lot about Menj. so you sign on with a tour. But If youre there waving money at them, they'll do it...

It is strange (or maybe not)... When we stayed at Menjangan, the Lovina DC was "promoting/ pushing" other further afield dive sites - guess so that they earn a little more on the transfers...

Anyway we like Pemuteran/Permuteran, the Monkey Pirate Jetty is good for night dive... Please indulge me once again - our snorkelling friend & the boatman saw a whale-shark at Pemuteran, while we were down diving (1st dive there!)... Haha...

Glad to hear your looking forward to diving in bali over christmas, the diving at that time of year is exceptional!! As far as diving at PJ and Secret Bay, we run daily trips upon request from the Zen Resort that you previously mentioned. It's no problem for us to pick you up next door at Nibbana Resort and take you diving anywhere in the northern area of Bali.

You don't need to stay in resorts nearby to dive in PJ. I stayed in Aditya Resort in Lovina and dove in PJ. The transfer was just a short time.
