Hey guys,

So my wife bought an Aeris Oceans 5 BCD and after using it for only a week long dive trip, we found a small puncture in the bladder.

I think we're going to get a new one for her as that BCD wasn't the best fit. But my question is, should I trash the old one or is there a market for non-working BCDs for parts? It's a shame as the rest of the BCD is in near perfect shape...

Thanks for your advice,
Mike

Unless you punctured it I would think there would be a warranty. I have a BCD with several hundred dives on it and no puncture and it has bumped into some stuff over the years.

I'd concur with investigating the warranty - even if that just meant repair/replacement and you could subsequently sell it as 'full working order' or 'new'.

I, personally, wouldn't trash it. I'm not sure of Aeris construction, but replacing the bladder is usually quite straightforward, so some might happily buy it as a defect, to repair. So a 'Sold as described/damaged' listing might earn some money and provide someone else with a cheap option. Then there's a 'parts' value - replacement LPI etc etc.

There's not much of a market for used BCs even in good working condition, unfortunately. So I wouldn't spend any money on fixing it, but Aeris customer service has been very good to me with regards to their computers, so maybe they'll take care of you. It's pretty common for BCs to get pinched when they're on a tank and the tank gets tossed onto a tank holder, with a resulting puncture. Unless it's a separate inner bladder, it's likely there's no 'official' fix for it. Most jacket BCs have a single layer bladder/outer fabric material. Some people have fixed small tears in those using aquaseal, but a manufacturer probably won't do that. And if the puncture was not caused by a fault in the manufacturing, it probably won't be under warranty, but you never know.

Think of this as an opportunity to try a different style of BC that fits her better. Hmmmmm, I wonder what that might be?
