The other day while hanging out at the quarry between dives, we started talking about pumpkins and pumpkin carving contests. There are still a few unanswered questions, maybe someone can help us out here.

Is a pumpkin’s buoyancy positive or negative in fresh water and in sea water?

What happens if you take an unaltered pumpkin deep, say 100 feet, will it implode?

If positive in sea water, what would happen if you took one to 100 feet and let go of it, could you use pumpkins as environmentally friendly surface marker? And if so, what is the DIR method for attaching a pumpkin to a spool?

I don't know, let's say it's positive. Take it to 100 ft and let go. I'd love to see the video from topside to see how far it shoots out of the water.

I just went to my first u/w pumpkin carving contest this past weekend. It took say a 5 lb rock to sink mine, after it was topped and gutted. As for whole untouched pumpkin....that could be interesting. We might have to test that theory at say Gilboa....that might be a lot of fun.

As for the DIR mithod of attachment, I would go with a good hefty Eye-hook thorough the bottom of the pumpkin, tie on to that, and then let-er rip to the surface

I didnt have the chance to make the carving contest this year at gilboa....What did the winners get? How was the turn out?

I didn't go either, but from the rumors I heard, the guy that carved the totem pole was there, and he did a pumpkin. I think it was the face of some guy...it was said to look pretty sweet. Also, I heard that Mike had some kind of a problem doing air-fills (go figure...Mike had a problem). Thus as a result, he gave everyone that participated a season pass. I don't know this for fact, but I believe that is one of the things that happened.

I think i would do one less dive for a free season pass!!! :D
