I want to perhaps check out these islands but I want a very budget accomadations and would prefer to do something that was not a package. Also, I will be in mainland Malaysia and not Singapore. All the places I found so far were from singapore.

Any tips on how to go, where to stay (budget please) and who to dive with?

Thanks,
Matt

Pulau Aur as a few resorts on it but they are more for weekend trips from Singapore or Malaysia. In Singapore, Scuba Corner and Friendly Waters manage the bigger ones. I honestly don't know if there are dive boats that go out mid-week from there. The boats to Aur leave from either Mersing or Tanjong Leman. While I prefer the diving around Aur to Tioman, if you are visiting one of these southern islands during the weekdays, Tioman is probably the better choice. There are lots of ferry boats from Mersing to there every day, there is definitely lots of options to dive every day and there is cheap accommodation available daily.

I've only been to Tenggol once and that was on a LOB so someone else should comment on that. I did prefer the diving around Tioman or Aur to that though.

Yeah.. Head to Mersing, to catch a ferry from there to Aur or Tioman. Once you get there, there will be dives ops around. =D IMHO, prices are relatively cheap compared to the United States or the Carribean.. Been there, done that...

So from Mersing I should be able to catch a boat to Aur? Know a good cheap place to stay in Aur.

Most resorts in Aur are very basic. The Divers Lodge run by Friendly Waters has the best facilities.. most accomodations come with slow slow boat transfer from Mersing.

basic is good! not into fancy. Any idea where to find a list of accomadations that I could contact?

I have never been to Aur. If you go please post your thoughts, good and bad.

Divers Lodge
http://www.friendlywaters.com.sg
Bluewater Resort
www.bluewater.com.my (very slow web site)
Atlantis Bay Resort
http://www.pulauaur.com/
Atlantis Bay now operate a speed boat direct on some days (1.5 hours not the slow boat to china).

Be aware that internet prices are not always the cheapest. On Aur I suspect you need to book in advance as it is very small, however on the bigger Islands and not public or school holidays you can get better rates at the door.

the best to find out it good time is by check local calendar.. Malaysia have alot holiday season !!! otherwise you might end up sleep on th beach.. if not busy season you just show up at reception office and book your room..from mersing. they have few speedboat 400 Hp engine ( Bluewater or Auto mersing ) they pretty good company to trust also they running trip twice a day trip to Aur .. i think around $75 ringgit maybe more ! yaa.. i'm not really high recommend to go to internet to check the price or travel agency in Mersing..they're rip off!!

you might see Manta or whale shark on this time of year...especially around 7 skies wreck.
