I don't think I saw anything in the manual about this. Why is there a opaque screen in front of the camera's internal flash? It looks like it can be removed. Is it useful for some situations but a hindrance for others?

A Flash diffuser is used to spread the light over a larger area. Without it the light will be more concentrated in the center of photo- could create a "hot spot" on picture

Ah. Thanks. Is that more of a problem with UW photography. I assume it is as the camera does not normally use a diffuser. Perhaps it is especially a problem when used with a wide-angle lens which I guess is more common underwater than above?
