My wife and I are planning on doing some underwater navigation practice this weekend. We had a hell of a time for our navigation "test", and thought more practice would be in order. I got some ideas from our instructor, but forgot to ask about line protocol. We're planning on throwing a few floats in the water, and practice navigating between them. As an aid, I thought I'd run a line between them on the bottom for the first few times, to make sure we are on the right bearing.

Here's my question:

Once we're done for the day, is it protocol to abandon the line (we're talking #18 flourescent pink braided mason line) or is it common courtesy to clean up after ourselves?

Clean up when you're finished.

Go buy a finger spool for about $2O from someplace like DeepSeaSupply and use that to mark your course between markers. White line will show up best vs. pink. Loop around the first marker and then run the line to the second tie off, loop the line a couple times around the open bolt snap and then clip the snap into one of the holes on the reel. When you're done, just roll the line back up on the spool. You'll be able to use your reel for your SBM and other diving needs over time. I don't think the pink line will be that useful.

Yes, There is a protocol, PICK UP THE DAMN LINE, sorry for being forth-wright but the only thing we should ever leave behind is bubbles.... Please be kind to sea, its the only one we got......

Thanks for the input, guys. I guess had I thought about it a little more, it should have been pretty evident. I didn't even think about other hazards I might be creating, like entanglement, fish getting caught in it, and other no-nos.

I knew I should have listened to Mom.....................
