I was just wondering if anyone out there does anything to protect the cord on their canister light. Looking at mine it just seems that it could easily get cut or damaged from continual use. I was kind of thinking about putting some of the plastic hose protector over it, what do you guys/gals think?

Why don't you try some split wire loom? You can get it at any auto parts store in different sizes.

Cords are a consumable item, get them replaced every 12-36 months depending on use. The outside holds up fine, but eventually the wires inside will split and the light will get intermittent. There's no outer covering that can make the inner copper wires last longer.

Make sure there are strain reliefs on the ends, otherwise they will definitely break at the glands. For years DRs didn't come with strain reliefs and the cords reliably broke at the canister gland.

I don't know what cable you have on your light or what kind of diving you will be doing with it. I have never covered up the cables and had no issues.

..
Higher quality cable (robotics) has supple strands and a very resistant outer layer. It is actually made for continuous movement, a bit more expensive, but well worth the price. I have had the ballast and bulb replaced on my 2005 light, but the cable is still fine.

Plus 1. With reasonable care, decent quality light cords will last a long time. If 12-36 month replacement makes you feel better, knock yourself out, but there are better ways to spend your money.

I called Dive Rite's customer service and they told me that they don't recommend putting anything over the cords as this could help to dry rot or cause other problems with the cable. I guess I will leave well enough alone. I was just worried about things easily making cuts into the cable lining, but I guess it isn't something I should be concerned about.

I agree - if putting something small and cheap over a cable would be better for it - I bet they would do it. My salvo is about 2 years old and the cable looks brand new.

Yup - a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
