My buddy and I are trying to plan a trip down the Shaw's Cove this week. We will already be going to Marineland on Tuesday, but we want a taste of something new for the end of this week "probably Thrusday,Friday,or Saturday". I've been looking at the Surfline lola forecast and it seems it will be mediocre at best. But I remember one of my LDS instructors tell me its a pretty protected cove and by looking at some maps, it seems to be. Anyone down in that area today? or maybe going to be down there in the early part of the week? Any info on conditions would be great! I have had the surfline forecast ruin some dives before and I especially don't want to drive an hour only to get blue balled. Thnx :D

Thanks for the link... I wonder how they determine visibility for their chart.. First hand account? or Estimate from swell, currents, etc.?

As thier location is only few blocks away from Shaws and other Laguna sites, they ask those coming out for first hand experiance... or they guess based on the norm if no first-hand... they try to up date twice a day..... also a good source of informaiton is from "wetsand" ... check this link out: WetSand SwellWatch 3D - Surf Report and Forecast Of course the best is to check it out for yourself because things change to fast on our coast. Enjoy....

I guess I should have read the bottom of the web page "The dive conditions listed are as of the date indicated and were personally observed by the Laguna Sea Sports staff. It is our desire to keep our customers as informed as is possible about the ever changing conditions of the dive sites in our immediate area."

Wetsand is a good site... but check out Surfline.com its got tons of swell models and the swell tracking data is top notch "membership is required for long term forecasts". Still though... Swell and wind are only 2 pieces of the greater puzzle that make up visibility. Nothing beats first hand accounts "like the ones on Laguna Sea Sports" Thnx again for the link;)

I'll be down there on Wednesday, I'll try to remember to post what it looks like for you.

That spot is a consistent 10-15 average when the swell is 2-3 in orange county depending on the direction.

It is tough to really get any good idea of what the conditions will be this far out. One thing is sure though, you will be able to find a site somewhere that is divable. It has to get be pretty ugly to lock you out of Laguna. One thing I like to avoid at Laguna is the surge, the vis is terrible if there is a strong surge.

Keep in mind the surfing forecast sites are hoping for surf so they just might be a bit bias to 'surf' conditions.
When I plan on doing a day of beach diving I try to select my 1st choice site, then select a second one that faces a different direction so I can have a backup if needed. Your in San Pedro so a good alternate could be Malaga Cove or Vets Beach.

My usual routine has been to start at Marineland and then work my way up hitting Christmas Tree, Malaga, and eventually Vets if conditions are bad. What other sites in the Laguna area might be good if Shaws looks iffy?

That is a catch, they all sort of face the same direction so they would probably all be similar. Baring a strong south swell you should be ok though!
