I was curious what the max file size or pixel size is in order to be able to upload.

Here's what is says on the Edit Profile Pic page:
Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 300 by 750 pixels or 97.7 KB (whichever is smaller).
However, there are folks with much larger profile pics. Not sure how or when that happened, but the language above is what is currently being accepted on the site.

Admins are not so restircted and sometime when we help people we fail to realise that we are uploading an oversized picture.
